Vector Illustration for Vibrant Compositions

Create simple vector graphics and transform them into cohesive compositions that reflect your artistic style by exploring typeface, color, and texture. An illustration course on Domestika.

In this online course, you’ll learn how to create simple vector graphics of your own and lay them out in one cohesive image.

I go over loads of tips and tricks for drawing in Adobe Illustrator, beginning with the sketch phase all the way through to the final composition. I also give general tips on channeling your inner creativity if you’re feeling stuck.

In the final project, you’ll combine multiple illustrations to make a poster of a place you love. Create a piece that’s part love letter, part travel poster that showcases your distinct style.

The Process

1 Sketch

After brainstorming and researching what we want to draw, we’ll start with rough thumbnail sketches from reference photos and iterate until we have a solid foundation.

2 Lineart

Next we’ll bring the sketches into Illustrator or another digital program to create the line art using the Shape Builder, Pen Tool, Blends and many more.

3 Color

Choose potential palettes and start to fill those lines in, limiting our choices, unafraid to get weird with abstract treatments. We’ll also discuss how to add texture with brushes and clipping masks.

4 Layout

Finally, we’ll bring all of our separate illustrations together and lay them out into one cohesive piece like a puzzle. Try out multiple options and use an open mindset to channel your creativity.

The End Result

Turn your final project into a poster of your favorite place that’s uniquely yours.

Complete the course without software and apply the same principles to traditional mediums.

With the final poster completed, you can even break down the illustrations again and use them for anything else, like stickers!
